In 2024, I made it to Round 2 of the NYC Midnight 100-word Microfiction challenge. My prompts were:
Genre: Action/Adventure
Word: “fume” (we were allowed to have it as a part of a larger word, as long as the whole word was there)
Action: Looking down on someone

The perils of adventurous dates

Best first date ever. Pulses raced, sweat poured: that’s climbing. Max led the first pitch, belaying Sam from the ledge as she scrambled behind.

“On belay.”

“Climbing.”

Pull. Lock. Adjust. I like his arse. Pull. Lock. Adjust. Losing sight of Max, Sam waited for “Safe”, instead hearing “Rope”. What? The falling end was cleanly cut. Looking up she saw Max peering down at her.

He’s gone. Stop. Think. No-one knows where I am. She fumed at herself.

First solo. Look ahead. Feet. Hands. Repeat.

Gasping at the top, seeing her ex, Josh, was a miracle. Until she saw his passenger.
